Mock up of negus magazine Contents page.

I have done a mock up of the contents page for my preliminary task; I have kept this simple too but made sure it looks appealing to students. For example, I have put images of students down the side and a puff to catch the readers’ attention.

Analyse 3 existing music magazine covers: Rock Sound Magazine.

Rock Sound.
Design features:
The house style for Rock Sound magazine is black, white, red and yellow; which are colours usually associated with rock music and they stand out against the dark background image. The main image is a medium shot of lead singers of three different bands because the magazine’s main article is introducing these new bands. The main headline stands out against the dark image and is bigger than the other cover lines, which attracts attention. The red button at the top left attracts attention too because the red stands out and it is one of the first things you see on the page. The font is the same except the main cover line which has a different font to attract readers to the magazine.

Language:
The phrase ‘New blood’ with the names of bands underneath informs readers that they are new bands; this makes people want to read more about these bands so they buy the magazine. The cover lines have information like ‘reveal all’ and ‘access all areas’ which intrigues readers to read the articles and find out more about the featured bands.

Image:
The image is a medium shot of three lead singers of different bands; they are new bands which the magazine is advertising to readers. The singers are looking directly at the readers and so it is more personal and attracts their attention.

Analyse 3 existing music magazine covers: KERRANG! Magazine.

Kerrang!
Design features:
The house style for Kerrang! Magazine are the colours white, pink, yellow and black which are colours usually associated with rock music. The main image is a medium long shot of a band called Paramore; one of the members is in front of the others which tells us she is the lead singer. The main headline is bigger than the cover lines so it stands out and the white and pink colours attract attention. The competition puff on the bottom right is yellow with black text which stands out; it attracts the readers’ attention and appeals to people who like to enter competitions.

Language:
‘Secret conflict revealed’ intrigues readers and makes them want to read about what has happened with the band. The pull quotes like ‘I was going to crack him with my guitar!’ also intrigue the reader and make them want to read more about it. The text ‘Poster pull out’ is written on the front cover and stands out so people see it and want to read more.

Image:
The image is of Paramore who are well known band which attracts attention of those who like their music and are fans of the band. The band members are looking directly at the readers which makes it more personal for the reader and attracts their attention to the magazine.

Alternative Press.


Design features:

The house style for Alternative Press magazine are the colours red, white and yellow which stand out against the dark background. The image is a medium shot of a band called ‘All Time Low’ and takes up the whole of the page. The band members look like they have super-powers which links to the cover line ‘Band of the year’ as it makes them seem powerful. The size of the cover line is quite large so it stands out and the font is easy to read; the font is the same on the page, it’s clear and the yellow and white makes it easier to read against the dark background. There are no other images except the main one so you have to look inside.

Language:
‘Win some, lose some (or both) AP reader’s poll’ makes the reader want to find out which bands won, lost or both. ‘Band of the year’ makes the reader want to find out about the band so they buy the magazine and read it, it attracts new readers as well as regular readers. There isn’t much text on this magazine; no cover lines or left-side third so people have to look inside.

The image is of All Time Low who are quite a well known band which attracts people to buy the magazine. The band members are looking directly at the readers which attracts them to the magazine.
