Music magazine double page spread analysis: KERRANG!, NME, Q.

Q magazine have a very simple layout like the previous two magazines however, it looks like there is more on the Q double page spread than on the other two. Q have used a medium long shot of the artist Lily Allen posing with her hands on her hips to link with the article; it takes up the whole right page of the spread and is part of the background for the rest of the spread. The direct eye contact makes it more personal and so attracts readers’ attention. Like NME, there are no smaller images or text on the image which could link to the headline and that the attention is only on her now. The article is laid out in columns along the bottom of the left page with black text on a grey background which stands out and is easy to read. The small introduction gives information about what’s in the article and invites readers to read it. The headline is a pull quote which makes the reader want to find out more; it takes up a lot of the left page of the spread. Q magazine have made it looks like the letters have been cut out from a newspaper and stuck down which gives the impression of a rebellious person. The large, bold font attracts readers’ attention as it stands out. The headline font and the article font are different which makes the double page spread more interesting but doesn’t look unprofessional. Q magazine have used red, black and white in this double page spread too; I like how they have matched the font colours with the clothes the artist is wearing.

NME magazine also uses a simple layout for their double page spread but I think it is less attractive than KERRANG! Magazines.  NME have used a long shot of the artist ‘Florence and the machine’ sitting on a box covered by what looks like the American flag; this could connote that she is very successful with her music in the USA. There are no smaller images or text on the image which shows connotes the importance of the artist. Again, the direct eye contact in the image makes it more personal. The image takes up the whole left page of the spread and has been edited as the background for the right page of the spread. The article is written in columns on the right page in black text which stands out against the light grey background. There is a small introduction with some information about the artist that links to the image and it hints to what the article will be about. The headline is written in bold, black text; it is also the name of a song by Florence which familiarises the readers with the artist. The headline font is different to the article and introduction font which catches the reader’s attention more and makes the double page spread more interesting. NME also uses the colours red, white and black on this double page spread but it doesn’t give the same effect KERRANG! does because of the grey in the background. Although we associate these colours with rock music, with this NME double page spread, we don’t.

KERRANG! Magazine uses a very simple layout on this double page spread but doesn’t make it boring for the readers. They have used a medium long shot of the band The All-American Rejects who the article is about; it takes up the whole spread and is also used as the background for the spread. The lead singer is in the middle and higher up than the other members which tells us he is the lead singer.  The way they look makes the band come across as relaxed but also serious about their music and what they do. The article is laid out in columns along the bottom; it doesn’t cover the faces of the band members so that the direct eye contact from the image makes it more personal. The text is black on a white background which makes it easy to read; the layout of the columns is quite neat. The headline is on the far left side written vertically in bold white text so it stands out. There is an introduction hinting to what the article is about, written in white text on a black background to catch the readers’ eye. We can tell this double page spread comes from a rock/punk music magazine because of the band in the image; they are mostly wearing red, black and white which are colours usually associated with this genre, so people who like this music will be the target audience for the magazine. KERRANG! have also used these colours on the double page spread so there is a house style for the spread. The article has been designed to look like it’s been written on paper from a note pad as you can see the ripped out part at the bottom, which makes it look more attractive than just plain white boxes. The font used on the page is mostly the same font but different sizes except for the little introduction part which uses a different font; this makes it stand out and catch the readers’ eye, KERRANG! often do this in their magazines. The pull quote is white on black in the middle of the article; it stands out and catches the readers’ attention so they read it and want to read the article because it is personal.

Mock up of negus magazine Contents page.

I have done a mock up of the contents page for my preliminary task; I have kept this simple too but made sure it looks appealing to students. For example, I have put images of students down the side and a puff to catch the readers’ attention.
